Speaking and listening involves more than analysing your ability to talk and hear other people. It is about adapting language to suit the situation and linking your listening and speaking skills to be able to respond to any argument.

Speaking is about presenting information and ideas, backing them up with non-verbal (unspoken) techniques. It also shows how you can adapt from writing texts to presenting them in spoken form. There are three types of speaking assessments in this unit. You will be assessed on one task in each category: PresentingListening and Speaking and Role-playing.

This unit is about how you communicate with others. You will have to think about how you present information and use persuasive techniques and body language when you talk. As well as this, you will be assessed on how you listen and respond to other people in your class.

Things to consider during speaking and listening

  • How you use spoken language
  • How you use your voice
  • How you use body language
  • Listening to others
  • How to react to the language and tone of other people
  • Exploring questions and responding to problems through developing your ideas
  • Context – real life talk situations and target audiences beyond the classroom

Film reviews
In this lesson learners will revise some film review vocabulary through pair-work discussions. They they will write their own film review after analysing a model. Then they will read each other’s reviews and have a class vote about which film looks most interesting.

Football and motivation
Motivation is an essential part of learning a skill. This lesson combines traditional approaches to motivation with the role of a self-concept in motivation The traditional approaches include: *The topic - football is probably the most popular sport in the world so the subject matter is motivating. *The tasks - the activities are designed to offer variety which should maintain the strength of the learners’ desire throughout the lesson and the final activity focuses on fluency which can give learners a sense of progress In professional sports psychology, athletes and coaches recognise the value of a positive self-concept and practise visualising success. In this lesson, learners are encouraged to compare themselves to professional footballers who have moved to the UK to play. They will be asked to visualise a successful future-self living and prospering in the UK or another English speaking country.

Pet Mania
This lesson is about pets and some tasks are suitable for very low levels. The topic is introduced with a simple vocabulary game and Task 1 is a class survey about pets which can be adapted depending on the level. Task 2 is a role play situation between a parent and their son/daughter who desperately wants a pet and Task 3 is a reading text about the fashion of having a small dog as an accessory. The final activities use flashcards to review vocabulary and play some games using the vocabulary learnt, as well as a discussion about dogs.
